India/Indian Ocean Basin Social and Gender
India used the Caste System
The system adapted to arriving peoples
Each group in the caste had its own code of conduct
The Caste system was swayed by changes in trade and the economy
They had subcastes known as jati
Merchants held important positions until the Mongol era
The Caste System became more complex and spread to Southern India (It was previously only used in Northern India)
They created guilds based on interests (ex: occupations)
Though initially unwelcomed, the Turkish and Muslim groups were later incorporated into the system
The Caste helped order work relationships with other workers
People in the lower castes converted to Islam in hopes of improving their social status
Islam helped shape social boundaries
